SOMATIC - DANCE DANCE DANCE - FEEL
AN IMAGE THAT YOU HEAR, A SOUND THAT YOU SEE
This workshop is for anyone wishing to access the poetic language of the senses as revealed through the wisdom of the body.
Somatic is an invitation to consider the body as a physical space. The sensations we experience in encounters with our surroundings can redefine how we perceive our body. The workshop offers an opportunity to experience inner and outer space as a single territory, using the most immediate and elementary tools we have available: the senses.
This workshop was conceived and realised during an artistic residence at Morni Hills in north India and is closely linked to my performance "Feel".
In India, where I lived for a year, sensory impressions naturally arose in places where the language barrier necessitated other forms of communication, therefore making an encounter with another culture possible.
The workshop moves between paradoxes using the language of the senses: "To see you have to close your eyes. In silence you listen. To find you have to get lost... In the darkness, the hands see, the nostrils evoke, the smells are heard." (E.Vargas)
This sensory language has the value of finding and discovering ways of perceiving the forgotten or the unexplored such as "When you look at a tree and say, “this is an oak” or “this is a Bengal fig”... to get in touch with the tree you have to place your hand on it and the word will not help you to touch it.” (Krishnamurti)
